How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
