How To

How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
