How To

How to replace a broken window

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
