Permit requirements

These are the things you should know about Idaho before you start any construction projects. While small-scale home improvements don't typically require permits, it is wise that you check the licenses for anyone who is above you. Otherwise, you could be losing your mechanics lien rights and payments. Be sure to check on your general contractor's subcontractors, too, to ensure they're licensed.

Bonding requirements

Many states require that contractors post bonds. Surety agencies issue bonds to guarantee payment. Idaho bonds cost $2,000 and are required to finance certain types of construction. Not only are bonds required for certain types, but local governments might also require them. Many times, plumbers, HVAC contractors, irrigation contractors and sprinkler contractors must post bonds. For details, please contact the Department of Building Safety in your state.

How do I replace a damaged window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
