How do you replace a broken window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
