How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
